She has spent more of her life in motion than standing still, and hers is a lifestyle that does not lend itself well to the acquisition of things. She carries with her a few solid reminders of her past, reminders of who and what she has been.

Some of them, she has treasured most by giving them away. The pair of earrings her mother had given her so long ago- What a tangled, complex relationship theirs had been, and yet the day she was given those earrings, it was so simple. Her mother had not been fond of displays of emotion, or perhaps simply did not know how to make them. But her mother had been proud of her that day, proud enough to say the words aloud.

She holds onto that memory as she passes along the earrings to Sydney. So simple, such a strangely normal gesture in two lives that have known few such moments. And it does not matter if Sydney never wears the earrings, just as it did not matter if Irina ever wore them. She had, though, for years, until they were taken from her when she turned herself over to the CIA.

The earrings are a message to Irina's daughter, as they were a message to her mother's daughter. She is so proud of Sydney as her mother was once so proud of her, but the message goes deeper, deep enough that she cannot known the whole of it yet.

Her most treasured possession is not something she can hold in her hands, but one she hopes someday she will hold, somehow.

Her daughter's trust.

Truth takes time.
